The Immutability of God, Part 1

Our world around us is constantly changing. Every four years, we vote for a president – either the same one for a second term or for a new one. Seasons change. Our bodies change. Our jobs change. Our marital status goes through changes.  Our kids change before our eyes. Our world is constantly undergoing changes.  Change is all around us.

We live in a world where morality is constantly evolving. Sins once frowned upon are now celebrated as liberating and legitimate. And those who consider themselves spiritual demand a god who is flexible and accommodating to our shifting moral standards.

But in the midst of all the changes, here is the good news:  Our God NEVER changes! He is unchangeable and unchanging. Psalm 102:25–27 says,

Of old You founded the earth,
And the heavens are the work of Your hands.
Even they will perish, but You endure;
And all of them will wear out like a garment;
Like clothing You will change them and they will
be changed. But You are the same, And Your years will not come to an end.

We are told that the reason why God has not wiped out the sons of Israel is because He remembered His promises to them and that He never changes. “For I, the Lord, do not change; therefore you, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed” (Mal. 3:6).  James picks up on this same theme and wrote: “Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow” (James 1:17).

God does not change. Change is either for the better or for the worse. Both are inconceivable with God—He couldn’t get any better and wouldn’t change for the worse. There is nothing about Him that needs to change.
God is immutable.
