In God We Trust

Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God – Psalm 20:7 NIV

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial was dedicated in 1982. In the first 15 years, 54,000 items were left at the Wall. It still takes almost an hour every night, [and much longer on Memorial Day,] to collect all the mementos-a teddy bear, a photo of a soldier's grandchild, a letter from a daughter who never knew her dad.

Every item is labeled and taken to a warehouse. No one knows quite how to deal with it all. "No one ever expected this to happen," a park ranger says. "It's so personal. It caught everyone by surprise."

Loss comes to us all, and we often carry our grief for many years. We struggle with our emotions. Is there a place where we can leave our sorrows and find healing for the wounds of life?

The answer is a resounding YES! As we come to enjoy this Memorial Day weekend, let’s remember not to put our trust in Chariots (our awesome military) or in horses (the might of our military), but instead, let’s trust in the Lord our God.

We of course, need to be thankful for the scores of men and women who have given their lives for this country. All the veterans who have served in the past and all who have given the ultimate sacrifice of all their own lives ought to make us grateful for the freedoms we enjoy this weekend and subsequent days thereafter. Whenever you light up that BBQ and whenever you put another shrimp on the BARBIE, it was made possible by many whom we never have met. Freedom comes with a price and for many it was a price they were willing to pay for.

Let the enemy boast of his invulnerable chariots and battle-tested horses; we will boast in the name of the LORD! It is better to trust in Him than in arsenals of stockpiled weapons. At the glance of the Lord even the mightiest armies will crumple to the ground! But those who are on the Lord's side will still stand upright when the smoke of battle has cleared away.

There are two groups of people mentioned in Psalm 20:7 – “some” and “we.” Go back and read the verse again. Which group are you a part of?
